Our Weekday Education Program is an outreach ministry of the church. We provide a loving, Christian, learning environment so that each child can reach his/her greatest potential spiritually, mentally, physically, emotionally, socially, and academically. This is accomplished by providing developmentally appropriate learning activities in a non-pressured environment and guidance in a Christian-based program. We follow the Fulton County School Calendar with a few exceptions. Preschoolers enjoy music and chapel each week and circle time, small group centers, art, snack and recess daily. We offer after school camps certain times of the year.
Our Curriculum we use comes from a variety of resources. This will include, but is not limited to Abeka, Zoo Phonics, and Singapore Math.
Abeka is a Christian based curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate for preschoolers. It is a balanced program which offers social experiences in music, art, motor skills, nature, and language. With low ratios and hands on learning, we feel our program will meet your child's needs and your expectations. Emphasis is placed on pre-reading, pre-writing, phonics and number skills to help preschoolers develop early literacy skills. We believe giving each child a good reading foundation is the key to developing successful students.
Zoo Phonics is used here at Crabapple Weekday Preschool for teaching children to become strong readers and spellers. The Zoo-phonics® method is popular as a language arts program not only in the United States but across the world. Zoo-phonics® uses animals drawn in the shapes of the letters for ease in memory. A related body movement is given for each letter. This concrete approach cements the sounds to the shapes of the letters. Lowercase letters and their sounds are taught first (needed 95% of the time in text), capital letters and letter names are taught later. Zoo-phonics® also provides a springboard for all other academia such as math, art, music, cooking/nutrition, social studies, science, grooming, physical education and sensory/drama. Every aspect of the program has been field-tested and found to be effective. Educational research repeatedly supports the focus of phonics in early reading programs.
10 Fun Facts About Zoo-phonics:
Zoo-phonics presents information in an age-appropriate way, moving from the concrete (26 zoo animals depicted on large cards) to the abstract (sounds represented by letters of the alphabet).
Zoo-phonics teaches the lower case letters first because those make up most reading material, not capital letters.
Contrary to what some believe, the English language is regular and predictable. Three-fourths of our most commonly used words in English have regular spellings. Zoo-phonics helps children see and understand the patterns in our language.
By doing a body movement or “signal” for each animal, children secure the phonemic information in their memories.
Zoo-phonics teaches short vowels before long ones.
Zoo-phonics emphasizes patterns. Children begin by learning a group of words that are similar such as pig, wig, big, fig, and twig, not random words such as the, since, of, me, and it.
Zoo-phonics is fully incorporated throughout the day in all subject areas. There are dozens of easy games from your childhood such as "Mother May I" and "Red Light, Green Light" that you can modify for Zoo-phonics instruction.
Zoo-phonics improves spelling skills.
Zoo-phonics improves pronunciation.
Zoo-phonics maximizes learning. When children hear information, they remember 10% of it. When they hear, see and say it, they remember 40%. When they hear, see, say and do it, they remember 70-100%.
Singapore Math is used by our Pre-K and T-K classes as part of our curriculum. The teaching method and curriculum used in Singapore, a nation that consistently ranks at the top of international assessments of student achievement in math. It’s based on a framework developed by Singapore’s Ministry of Education that emphasizes mastery of concepts through dynamic problem solving and communication.
One of the defining features of Singapore math is visualization. The progression through concrete, pictorial, and abstract phases in understanding math concepts supports real-world application of math. Students start from hands-on activities, work through representations, then arrive at numbers.
Singapore math is a powerful method with proven results. It provides both instant improvement and long-term mastery. Singapore math teaches students the how and why of foundational math by steadily building skills with the goal of preparing them for more advanced topics. The approach is known for its focus on depth and concepts over memorization and drill.
Singapore math is about drawing connections, supporting the thinking process, and instilling comprehensive understanding. It encourages perseverance and naturally gives students confidence as they become equipped to solve problems using many different tools.
Grades Pre-K & T-K include specific visualization activities and provide suggestions for small group and center work. The series provides guidance on hands-on components.
Our Music Program provided by Kindermusik is designed to work in virtually any educational setting, our research-driven curricula provide a unique and effective way to reach children of all backgrounds, developmental levels, and learning styles. We offer developmentally appropriate levels for all ages, with each activity providing the groundwork for building language, literacy, math, and social-emotional skills. The fun and joy inherent in music-making encourages positive teacher-child interactions, and creates an engaging and disciplined classroom routine.
Our Teachers create a warm and loving classroom as we bridge the gap from home to school. Several of our teachers have been here for 15+ years which says a lot about longevity. We are all CPR/First Aid certified. We attend training seminars each year to keep our skills up to date so that your child gets our best. We are concerned about the process rather than the product, success without pressure, a love of learning, and a love of Jesus.
