| Music Opportunities at Crabapple FBC |
The Bible is filled with many references to music: vocal music, instrumental music, the music of nature,
the music of the body such as clapping and dancing. Music has the power to inspire as evidenced by
Old Testament battles waged with the trumpeters and musicians leading the charge. The book of Psalms
is a collection of poems written by King David, many of which were intended to be used as musical
settings with very specific musical directions supplied. Throughout the Bible we find that the praise of
God was most often expressed with music. And we are also encouraged to lift one another up in the same way.
Colossians 3:16 says:
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach...and as you sing psalms,
hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts toward God."
Consider these three examples:
Psalms - actual scripture set to music;
Hymns - time-tested songs of faith;
Spiritual Songs - new songs of personal praise and worship.
And as the verse says, we direct them toward God with heart-felt gratitude.
We pattern our music at Crabapple from these examples. Some would call our approach
"blended" - and we strive to present music in ways that honor God textually as well as musically.
It may be through an old hymn or gospel song; it may be with a contemporary song or chorus;
in a style that is upbeat or at times contemplative. We use many resources to present
our music - choirs, children, youth and adults, soloists, ensembles, instrumentalists,
quartets, special invited guests, and even some "open-mic" events such as our "Front-Porch Singings."
Rest assured that if you have a musical talent that you would like to offer, you will find a
place of service here.
|
Our hope is that you will prayerfully consider establishing your "place" in any of
our musical opportunities and that you will give first place to your commitment,
even over and above your musical abilities. It is one of the most meaningful things
you will ever do.
In Christ,
Ken Hayes
