| What is Awana? | |
|
The acronym Awana comes from the first letters of: Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed (2 Timothy 2:15) | |
Awana Clubs International began over 50 years ago in downtown Chicago as an outreach to inner-city children. The program has spread to all 50 United States and in more than 104 foreign countries. This year, over 11,200 churches throughout the world sponsor Awana programs. Its purpose is best stated in the Awana Pledge:..."to reach boys and girls with the gospel of Christ, and train them to serve Him."
Awana is a Bible-centered children’s program that makes scripture memorization fun. On arriving at a typical Awana gathering, the children are assigned to age-appropriate groups that engage in a variety of fun activities.Assembly – Club night begins with a fast-paced, large group rally where clubbers enjoy music, skits, and a Bible-application message at the children’s level of understanding. Game Time – The group is then separated into “clubs” where they engage in age-appropriate games that teach sportsmanship and values in team competition. (30 minutes) Handbook Time – Bible verses and principles are presented through “handbook" instruction. The children study at their own pace, as they are given support and assistance from the club leaders. Awards are given as the clubber progresses through the handbook to further reinforce the learning process and encourage the child. (30 minutes) Council Time – Each group meets as a separate club for a time of listening to a special Bible message and application, praise and prayer.
